From garage to museum

Before it became a museum, cars were driven around Kanal-Centre Pompidou. This is where they were repaired, made and sold. Indeed, this used to be a Citroën garage! But housed in a beautiful building from the 1930s …

How can you tell? And how you can convert a garage into a museum? What do you need? During this tour you will learn more about the history of the building, the style, the volumes and the materials used. Together we will also reflect on the museum of the future.

The Artworks @ Kanal-Centre Pompidou

Contemporary art can be very confusing. In the past artists used to make paintings and sculptures. Today artists make installations and performances, and artworks are not always easy to understand … But art always means something. Artists make things to show what they think about society and in doing so invite the viewer to reflect with them.

At Kanal-Centre Pompidou we have a lot of nice contemporary artworks. Come and have a look and reflect with us on the meaning of the artworks. This tour will give you an overall picture of what is on show at Kanal-Centre Pompidou.

The Artworks - Sculptures

A lot of artists at Kanal-Centre Pompidou make three-dimensional works, but to do so they don’t use the traditional materials of the past such as wood and marble. Want to find out what they do? Then come and have a look!

The Artworks - House

In cities, more and more people live in apartments, but in the countryside, more and more people live in houses. Is that also the case in other countries of the world? And how do artists deal with this? At Kanal-Centre Pompidou artists present a range of very different houses. Some are even upside down! Houses and the way we live are a source of inspiration for artists.

Ar(T)chitecture

This tour offers you the best of both worlds. It takes in both the building and the artworks! A visit to Kanal-Centre Pompidou is a total experience. Accompanied by a guide, you will discover different contemporary artworks in a unique setting. Let yourself be surprised by the guide’s choice.

I can do that!

There are a lot of clichés about contemporary art, the most common being ‘I can do that!’ But in fact, contemporary art is not always that easy to understand. What’s more, it consists of so many different things!

Whether it involves design, installations, performances, etc., contemporary art demands an investment from the public. That is why it is sometimes easier to explore artworks with a guide who knows the artists and the different facets of their work.

During the tour we reflect together on the meaning of the artworks and their significance in our contemporary society.

The Artworks - Design

In the autumn of 2018 Kanal-Centre Pompidou presents, in collaboration with Design September and ADAM Brussels Design Museum, Red and White, an exhibition on design. In the 1960s, red and white were, in part due to pop art, the cult colours for plastic objects. The works, which strike a balance between industrial object and radical design, sound out the limits of art and architecture.

Red and White: from 5 September 2018 until 7 January 2019

Contemporary art draws out a lot of feelings, ranging from anger to emotion … Everyone reacts differently to art. We try to express our feelings in the form of poetry and rap. Let yourself be inspired by the artworks. A team of poetry slammers accompanies you through a tour during which you learn how to slam and to express your feelings through words and rhyme.
