Brazilian choreographer, researcher and performer Marcelo Evelin is a prominent name in the field of contemporary dance. His latest creation came into being in a former warehouse in his hometown, Teresina, which he uses as his artistic workplace. Raw and unpolished, the space reflects the city and the surrounding country, where everyday lives run up against powerful political tensions and a growing intolerance towards minorities and artists.

Mon réveil me réveille (2017)

Our day starts as soon as we wake up and lasts until we fall asleep. These two extremes align the primal unity of our lifetime. The idea of realizing these two ends in a short lapse of time and of questioning the act of awaking from sleep as an artificial force is the inspiration behind this work.

To indicate the process of time and to ritualize everday movements, this living installation creates a situation in which an artist sleeps with an alarm clock until she is woken by the alarm, repeatedly.

BEING WITH PEDAGOGY

On November 24, CIVA organizes a one-day discussion Being with Pedagogy — a year after its seminal series Being with Art / Being with Architecture.

This event follows a two-day symposium, Scaffolds (22-23 November), further exploring ideas of radical experimentations and the role of critical pedagogies in art and architecture.

It will be again an opportunity to take risk and rethink the power and responsibility of education today within the context of climatic, cultural and political swiftly changing conditions.

System K, a film by Renaud Barret from 2018, portrays the artistic scene of Kinshasa. It depicts the social, political, and cultural context of Kinshasa, and shows the ways in which a vibrant performance scene emerges despite harassment from the authorities and the artists' personal difficulties..

There will be a Q&A with director Renaud Barret moderated by Ayoko Mensah (Artistic Programmer at BOZAR) after the screening (17.11).

The unclassifiable artist, pioneering musician and tireless experimenter Charlemagne Palestine will install a monumental carillon on the ground floor of the Showroom for a period of seven months. Based in Brussels, this leading figure of the American avant-garde proposes to activate this invasive installation regularly on the occasion of hypnotic concerts.

In 2016 the artist Jocelyn Cottencin conceived a performance project for 12 dancers. The project was first performed at the Centre Pompidou in April 2016. Working at the crossroads of installation art, architecture, graphic design, video art and dance, Jocelyn Cottencin logically proposes with ‘Monumental’ a project that subtly moves borders.
