The Models & The Porters

18/01/2024

How do young people view their careers? Is working a dream come true for them or something more of a necessary evil? In The Models, filmmaker Sarah Vanagt looks at the aspirations of the young people of Brussels just before they take the plunge into the job market. The installation, together with her earlier film, The Porters, can be seen at K1.

Swamp Sacrifices

24/02/2024

Since 2021, artists Paula Almiron and Wouter De Raeve have been working in Brussels’ Northern Quarter to investigate the impact of urban planning on local communities. The neighbourhood, like many others in the city, is located in a large swampy area, which was drained to provide space for the growing city. The swamp buried under the asphalt streets of Brussels serves as a starting point of Swamp Sacrifices, a two-day programme of performances, a concert, screenings, and talks.

SCAR THE CAR

24/09/202027/09/2020

How do people mourn? How do we remember someone? How do we deal with the loss of something precious? Every culture, every conviction, every person deals with it in different ways, with specific rituals.

The project Scar The Car by Brussels based artist Eric Van Uytven, son and grandson of Brussels car mechanics, was planned to be a weekend-long happening at the gallery Waldburger-Wouters, coinciding with the opening of It Never Ends in KANAL at the end of April. The Covid-19 pandemic decided otherwise.

Through her colorful, layered style and feminist, socially engaged critique, AMVK presents us with paintings and characters that constitute the artist's intuitive image of the capital and its history.

The Act of Breathing: Notes on Fugitivity

16/09/2023

With The Act of Breathing: Notes on Fugitivity, curators Sorana Munsya and Evelyn Simons create a space-time in which to analyse the links between the struggle to breathe and the concept of Black fugitivity. The notion of Fugitivity, mainly developed in Black American and Caribbean literature, refers to the history of slavery and the flight of maroons from plantations. Here, we will be exploring how to translate this concept into a contemporary Belgian postcolonial context.
