This private garden, nestled in the heart of a densely populated neighbourhood near the canal, is an invitation to embrace a more raw and spontaneous nature. It is conceived above all as a natural garden, with minimal intervention in planting. When the owner entrusted the transformation of this former industrial site to ECTV Architecten (Els Claessens and Tania Vandenbussche) and landscape architect Geert Meysmans, the latter encountered a plot covered by a concrete slab, sparsely punctuated with a few buddleia bushes. This constraint became a source of inspiration. In dialogue with the client, Meysmans reinterpreted the concrete not as an obstacle, but as a substrate for life. The slab was selectively broken to allow spontaneous vegetation to emerge, while bands of uncrushed stone define the garden’s pathways. Fragments of concrete create a mineral environment in which wild plants take root, gradually complemented by serviceberry trees and two drought-resistant hackberry trees. A discreet sanctuary designed to restore biodiversity and regenerate the soil, this evolving garden nurtures the life it hosts, slowly transforming over time.
