Accessibility

Kanal welcomes everyone and is committed to ensuring that all visitors, artists, participants, staff members and partners can fully access and enjoy the museum’s spaces and programmes.

This visitor information applies to the entire building, which is scheduled to open on 28 November 2026. Additional information will be provided in the run-up to the opening. Do you have any questions? Please contact tickets@kanal.brussels. You can also send your questions about financial accessibility to that email address. Do you have a question about a group visit? Please email groups@kanal.brussels. The Kanal team will be happy to assist you.

Metro, tram, bus

Kanal is located close to the Yser stop, which is served by bus, metro and tram lines:

  • Bus 46 is fully accessible for wheelchair users.
  • Metro lines 2 and 6 – At Yser station, there is a height difference between the platform and the metro. According to the accessibility page of MIVB, boarding with a wheelchair is possible with assistance, but for some wheelchair users the gap may be too large. For greater certainty, you can ask someone in your group for help or request free assistance from MIVB in advance. An accessible lift is located at exit 3 (Rue de Laeken). It leads to the corner of Rue de Laeken and Boulevard d’Anvers, which is a seven-minute walk from Kanal.
  • Tram 51 is interrupted due to works until December 2026. The Marguerite Duras stop is within walking distance but is not accessible for wheelchair users.

Car or (school) coach

Five accessible parking spaces are available on Quai de la Voirie. Kanal does not have a car park. Limited street parking is available on Quai de Willebroeck.

The building has four step-free entrances with automatic doors and is fully wheelchair accessible. In the central welcome room, you will find the info desk and a low-height ticket counter. Several lifts throughout the building provide easy access to different floors.

Manual wheelchairs are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis in the Welcome room on the ground floor of Kanal. To ensure availability, it is recommended to request a wheelchair in advance by emailing tickets@kanal.brussels. For any assistance questions, please contact the team in the Welcome room or at the entrance to the exhibitions.

Portable stools are available at the entrance to the exhibitions.

K1, Kanal’s annex building across the canal, is not presently step-free and not accessible for wheelchair users.

Accessible toilets for wheelchair users are available on the ground floor and the first floor. All restrooms at Kanal are gender-neutral and lockable.

Two children's toilets are located on the ground floor behind the Welcome room in the main restroom area, and one next to the playground on the first floor.

On guided tours, Kanal guides carry a voice amplifier during busy or noisy periods. You can always ask for one to be used. Guides can also provide a portable induction loop for visitors with hearing aids. Please indicate this when booking a tour or workshop.

Kanal also regularly organises sign language guided tours in Flemish Sign Language (VGT) and French Belgian Sign Language (LSFB) for all exhibitions.

Guide dogs are welcome throughout Kanal, including in the exhibition spaces.

Large print visitor guides and magnifying glasses are available for each exhibition.

Noise-cancelling headphones, sunglasses and fidget tools are available at the entrance to the exhibitions. Staff in the Welcome room and exhibition spaces will be happy to assist you.

All texts and visitor guides related to exhibitions and programmes are available in Dutch, French and English.

Accessibility is a core value at Kanal. Spaces and services are continuously improved based on visitor feedback. Kanal works closely with people with disabilities through an advisory board which provides continual guidance. Do you have a question, suggestion or comment? Please let us know via tickets@kanal.brussels.
