Playground

Assorted textured paper strips, wooden sticks, and small rocks are scattered on a dark surface.

The indoor playground on the first floor is a real rendezvous point for young and old. Everyone ages four and up is invited to come play or take a break: children and pupils visiting an exhibition, their parents, teachers and caretakers, and families and youth organisations from the neighbourhood.

Assemble

The playground was designed by Assemble, a collective working at the intersection of architecture and visual arts, and winner of the Turner Prize in 2015. Through their project Assemble Play, they developed an innovative and participatory approach to playground design. For Assemble, playgrounds are spaces where children can play freely and without inhibition, invent their own worlds and fully appropriate public space.

The playground was developed through a series of workshops and play sessions. Young participants and other experts were invited to provide feedback or simply to play without constraints. These workshops took place in collaboration with the École de Cirque de Bruxelles and the École Fondamentale de Héliport, and through activities in Bonnevie Park in Molenbeek, where children were able to test different concepts and materials in situ.

The playground is both a permanent fixture and natural extension of the many events and activities for children that are organised at Kanal. From day one, there will be abundant opportunities to play!
