Zero Horizon is a series of audio guides proposing visitors to experience the museum not as a finished institution, but as a place that is still evolving.

Five artists were invited by David Weber-Krebs and Alexander Schellow to enter Kanal at a moment when the building had already been physically transformed into a museum, but its public life had yet to begin. Corridors, halls and infrastructures were already present, yet the narratives, exhibitions and routines that would define the museum were still taking shape. The doors were still closed.

Following spoken instruction provided by the artists, Zero Horizon invites visitors to move through Kanal. Located in the past, the recordings focus on surfaces, distances, thresholds, acoustics and absences, turning individual perception into a shared archive of the building. At the same time, they evoke possible futures, memories and transformations, imagining the museum as a (past) future ruin – echoing land artist Robert Smithson’s idea of the ruin as a site where the future and the past can coexist.

This commission forms part of How to open, the first year of Protocols for opening the museum, a three-year inquiry into what it means for a new museum in Brussels to be truly open, welcoming and public.
