For the opening of Kanal, Otobong Nkanga transforms one of the large open spaces into an intimate venue for meeting and co-creation. At its centre are wooden looms, where a weaving community made up of local groups will work every day. Participants include members of Ftouma Laayoune’s Sew For Life, a programme for the economic empowerment and integration of female asylum seekers in Brussels, as well as undergraduate students from the professional weaving course at the Haute École Francisco Ferrer. They are supported by weaving experts Georges Ahokpe and Estelle Chatelin of Ahokpe + Chatelin. Based in Belgium and Benin, this textile studio explores traditional weaving practices. The weavers will gradually transform their surroundings into a communal space where visitors can work on the looms, adding their own colours and patterns to the evolving textile work.
