A figurative painting depicts an intimate moment, with one person braiding another person’s hair while seated on a cream-colored sofa, rendered in warm, expressive tones.

In 1925, a Mangbetu woman from north-eastern Congo became the viral campaign image of La Croisière Noire, a colonial propaganda expedition across the African continent, sponsored by Citroën. In 1934, construction began on Citroën’s flagship garage in Brussels, marketing the idea of imperial conquest as much as cars.
The exhibition An infinite woman explores, in two parts, how the Mangbetu women functioned as a colonial symbol and how artists of African descent have reclaimed and subverted this imagery until the present day.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors can discover the exhibition through a Flemish Sign Language (VGT) or Langue des Signes Francophone Belgique (LSFB) guided tour. An experienced guide will introduce some of the key works and themes, inviting you to look, discover and engage in conversation together. To look, discover and engage in dialogue together.

The guided tours are conducted by deaf or hard-of-hearing guides and are reserved for visitors who use sign language. They have been developed in collaboration with the Vlaamse gebarentaalcentrum (VGTC), the centre of knowledge and expertise for Flemish Sign Language and for the development, dissemination and social recognition of VGT and its users; Arts & Culture, an organisation that aims to make culture, in the broadest sense, accessible to the deaf community and to anyone who wishes to gain a better understanding of their world; and with the F.R.i.D.A. collective, which is committed to supporting women and working towards an anti-ableist society.
