In Batty Bwoy, the first work in choreographer and performer Harald Beharie's Trilogy, myths surrounding the Black queer body are dismantled. Reappropriating a Jamaican slur directed at queer men – literally "butt boy" – the performance embraces play and desire while confronting violence and seduction, opening space for new ways of imagining Black queer embodiment.
Since its premiere in 2022, this intense solo has toured internationally. Within it, bodies and language absorb, transform and regurgitate images, fears and desires. A pulsating prog-rock soundtrack accompanies Beharie's confrontation and reclamation of the queer body as "deviant" or "monstrous", navigating the shifting boundaries between pain, pleasure and joy.
Batty Bwoy was created with the duo Karoline Bakken Lund and Veronica Bruce, Ring van Möbius and Jassem Hindi. Presented for the first time alongside the Belgian premieres of Undersang and Sweet Spot, it offers a rare opportunity to experience Beharie's full Trilogy across different spaces in and around Kanal.
