The festival uses documentary film to show how broad policy questions are addressed through moving images and in daily life. This proximity between political abstraction and lived reality is particularly significant in Brussels, both a centre of international decision-making and a city shaped by financial pressures, migration debates, racial inequality, colonial histories and linguistic divisions. It brings these realities into dialogue with the political debates surrounding them, bridging local and international contexts.
Starting in 2027, Kanal will host festival activities and present additional programmes. These will feature a selection of artists' films and feature-length works focusing on self-determination, shown in conjunction with Banu Cennetoğlu’s exhibition right?, as well as the Brussels premiere of Ruben Desiere's In Between Revolutions (2026), which is co-presented with Beursschouwburg.
