"Exploring how light, colour and space can be utilised within the interplay between architecture, interior design and the environment." Jean Glibert Jean Glibert, Atelier espaces urbains et ruraux: programme, 1975-1995.
These 11 gouaches form part of the Épures series (comprising 56 works), in which Glibert reflects on colours, their combinations and application techniques. They are executed on white A1 sheets or on industrial graph paper found at a flea market. The title refers to the architectural term for a technical drawing at a 1:1 scale. The Épures [Sketches] stand out for their simplicity and conciseness, with thick black lines in Indian ink delineating areas of matt primary colour, either glued onto the sheets or carefully applied with gouache.
The series concluded in 1997 with an exhibition at the Museum of Ixelles. Alongside this theoretical exploration, Glibert applies his insights to several projects as SRIB building (1993/1997/2009) and Maisin Centre (2004), both in Brussels. His body of work includes more than 200 interventions in the built environment. Among the most striking examples illustrating how to make the most of light, colour and space, one might mention the Amphithéâtre Opéra at the University of Liège, completed in 2013, where a large red volume cuts through the building to reveal a new spatial organization, the Ring 9 in Charleroi in 2017, as Glibert had taken a keen interest in highway infrastructure, public transportation, and major engineering structures as early as the 1970s.
