Emile Rubino

Emile Rubino is a Brussels-based artist, writer and co-founder of the magazine Le Chauffage. He explores how images acquire meaning, playing with the often clumsy and ambiguous way in which photography seems to 'explain' or capture something. Combining, appropriating and reinterpreting a wide range of photographic discourses and histories, he draws attention to the photographic image as both object and representation, a delicate yet vast vessel whose material, contextual and ideological relationship to labour and creativity remains under constant negotiation. His deliberately eclectic and sometimes collaborative approach to image-making spans analogue and digital processes alike, in an attempt to question the concept of 'the photographic' and to explore the complex relationship between art's social role and realism.
