KATERINA ANDREOU

With only a record player as her stage partner, Katerina Andreou, a Greek artist based in France, challenges the boundary between autonomy and authority, conditioning and free will, which already underlay the solo A Kind of Fierce, the winner of the 2016 Jardin d’Europe prize. She is interested in house music and dance – from New York and Chicago in the 1980s – as practices of métissage, developed by people of different origins and using different techniques, dancing together to the same music. The need to belong versus the search for identity. Far from any idealization of purity, everything is nothing but an assemblage of diversities.

Born in Athens, Katerina Andreou is a dancer, choreographer and musician based in France. She was part of the TRANSFABRIK project on programming policies in France and Germany led by Yvane Chapuis and Franz Anton Cramer. She was also part of the collective laboratory Emanticipation, initiated by Emmanuelle Huynh and François Quintin at the Fondation Lafayette Anticipations in Paris. She has collaborated with artists DD Dorvillier, Emmanuelle Huynh, Lenio Kaklea, Anna Gaiotti, Ana Rita Teodoro, Dinis Machado and Jocelyn Cottencin. In 2015 she was awarded a Danceweb grant to attend ImpulsTanz, the international festival in Vienna. Her latest creation, A Kind of Fierce, won the 2016 Jardin d’Europe prize of the ImpulsTanz festival in Vienna.
