Black Hole + Not Your Techno Club Night

Sara Dziri

How can rave become a survival mechanism for people who are tired of living in a society that doesn’t accept them for who they are?

Black Hole sees versatile music producer, composer and DJ Sara Dziri team up with dancer and choreographer Yasmina Tayoub. Together, they bridge the gap between rave culture and contemporary dance, between electronic music and North African trance tradition, between ravers and the rest of the world. Drawing from their own cultural heritage, they explore the phenomenon of trance and rave. The central question? How can rave become a survival mechanism for people who are tired of living in a society that doesn’t accept them for who they are?

During a work visit to Cairo, Sara Dziri was inspired by the zār, an ancient trance-like healing ritual typically associated with women and outsider communities, who use ecstatic dancing to find solace, liberation and meaningful connection. She saw strong similarities with the underground rave culture that emerged in New York City in the 1980s in the wake of the Stonewall LGBTQIA+ riots. Black Hole celebrates community, healing and togetherness through dance and music, far away from political judgement and society’s prying eyes.
