In recent years, open letters, collective statements and public declarations have become a defining feature of international film festivals, particularly in response to the genocide in Gaza. From the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlinale to IDFA and the Academy Awards, these texts have shaped public debate, urging institutions to take positions and exposing the rhetoric and politics of language itself.

In this new lecture-performance, Daniella Shreir examines the open letter as both a political and cultural form. Drawing on visual analysis, close reading and material from a forthcoming survey by the film journal Another Gaze on the state of film institutions, she traces how these statements circulate, what they demand of their recipients, and whether they can produce meaningful change.

This event is part of Film as told by, a monthly series exploring the past, present and future of film.
