Filmmaker, writer, curator and teacher Eric de Kuyper has led many artistic lives. After working as a producer and presenter for Belgian television, he co-wrote several films with Chantal Akerman, showcased his own films at the Venice, Rotterdam and Berlin Film Festivals, published numerous books and collaborated on projects across the fields of music, theatre and choreography. A pioneer in live cinema, he paired his own silent films with existing musical scores by composers such as Schumann, Debussy and Berlioz, and presented these works in major concert halls in Rotterdam and Leipzig.

Reflecting this remarkable career, this special edition of Film as told by invites friends and collaborators to explore different facets of de Kuyper’s practice. Inspired by his years presenting the groundbreaking television programme De Andere Film [The Other Film], each guest offers a personal perspective through film excerpts, readings, anecdotes or reflections, echoing de Kuyper’s role and legacy as a host, mediator and advocate for others’ work. Weaving the various contributions together will be a screening of de Kuyper’s Echte Clichés (‘Real Cliches’, 1991), a rarely seen series of vignettes centred on one of the filmmaker’s recurring interests, his passion for dance.
This event is part of Film as told by, a monthly series exploring the past, present and future of film.
