Past
exhibition plan

This event ran from 27.08.2021 to 02.09.2021. But wait, there's always more at Kanal! Check out the calendar.

Hospitality is a fundamental value in most cultures, but this timeless and universal practice seems to be in crisis. In the context of cultural antagonisms, identity politics, climate change, technological disruptions, pandemic crises, and the increasing plea for systemic change, we ask: What does hospitality mean for a cultural institution?

The first chapter of 'Institution Building' starts with the beginning: an empty space—a few lines on the floor, part of an evolving architecture by Jan de Vylder and Inge Vinck that prefigures the forthcoming chapters of the exhibition like a giant spatial Excel sheet. It creates connections to the structural system of the CIVA building as much as it allows for new, almost accidental configurations.
