On her first trip to Chicago, Luna Mahoux headed to the city's South Side, where she walked around documenting its daily life. She accidentally got off the bus in Englewood, where she passed a shop window full of caps with the words Black Lives Matter on them, emblazoned in rhinestones.
This work is Mahoux's first self-portrait, a selfie she took with her iPhone of her wearing one of these caps. The title refers to the words of a woman she met in a local church. Instead of using the selfie to capture her personal experiences, she uses it to reveal striking contradictions. The image shows her fascination with African American culture, which she experiences from a distance being a Black woman from Europe. At the same time, she gauges the divide between pop culture icons and the stark reality of people living on the edge of the city. The capitalist nature of the mass-produced caps, sold in one of the most vulnerable neighbourhoods in the US, is completely at odds with the message they convey.
