In Balance of the Invisible and the Foreseeable Gabriel Kuri connects one of the central questions of sculpture with the social issues of today.

Balance of the Invisible and the Foreseeable is a sculpture made with multicoloured metal discs and sleeping bags. The metal pieces lean against each other precariously, with sleeping bags wedged underneath and between them.

Both the materials and the shape of the artwork point to Gabriel Kuri's main preoccupations. Rooted in minimalism and geometric abstraction, the work refers to the social problems that are caused by the financial systems underpinning our society. The bright colours of the discs recall the logos of credit card brands like Mastercard, Maestro and Cirrus, while the sleeping bags evoke the spectre of homelessness. Both formally and figuratively, the work connects one of the central questions in sculpture − how to strike and maintain a structural balance – to unchecked credit lending and the resulting housing crisis.

The artwork was created for the exhibition All probability resolves into form, which was hosted in The Common Guild during the 2014 Glasgow International festival.
