Joëlle Tuerlinckx studied at ERG in Brussels and later also taught there. In 2018 she received an honorary doctorate from the faculty of architecture and arts at Hasselt University. Her work consists of installations, drawings and video, but also performances and improvisations. She creates subtle interventions in the exhibition space to explore new ways of perceiving and attributing meaning. Since the late 1980s, Tuerlinckx's work has been exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions at the DIA Art Foundation in New York, Kunstmuseum Basel/Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Basel, Haus der Kunst in Munich, Arnolfini in Bristol, WIELS in Brussels, the Reina Sofía in Madrid, MAMCO in Geneva, The Drawing Center in New York, The Power Plant in Toronto and The Renaissance Society in Chicago. She also participated in Skulptur Projekte in Münster, Manifesta 10 in St. Petersburg and documenta 11 in Kassel. Her work can be found in the collections of the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, FNAC in Paris, Generali Foundation/Museum der Moderne in Salzburg, MoMA in New York, Reina Sofia in Madrid and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
