"If you can survive in South Memphis, you can survive anywhere." La Chat in the film.
In this intimate documentary, Chastity Daniels, aka rapper La Chat, takes artist Luna Mahoux on a nighttime drive through the streets of Memphis. En route, La Chat tells the story of how she became a rapper, looking back at important moments in her life. She takes Mahoux to the place where her brother was shot and killed after a gang war, and to the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968. Her memories also drift to the famous rapper Gangsta Boo or Lola Mitchell, her best friend whom she calls "sister". Boo died of an overdose in 2023.
La Chat's story spontaneously connects her personal life to the broader history and culture of the Black community in Memphis and the United States. Instead of actively directing, Mahoux merely observes as a silent witness; La Chat retains complete control over her story, the locations and the way she is portrayed. This documentary marks both a new step in Mahoux's career and a continuation of her ambition to create an archive of Black female icons.
