Angles Ambigus

Ambiguous Angles is an image that can be interpreted in multiple ways, depending on the viewer’s perception or the exhibition context. In reality, the image is a photograph of the front and back of a plastic film prop of an unspecified piece of rocaille. It can be seen as a shell, a volute, a soap dish, Cinderella's carriage, ovaries, an evil mouth, a portal, a wormhole, a crypt, or a grotto… In any case, it appears quite grotesque and kitsch. The title makes this plurivocal interpretation apparent. The image is "ambiguous".

The wall sticker is a large-scale scenography device which adds a theatrical and profane dimension to the sacrosanct white cube. Theatre and scenography have always been part of the vocabulary of Danai Anesiadou who graduated from the Programme in Theatre and Dance Studies at DasArts in Amsterdam. Previously she also worked in the field of costume design and scenography for various theatres. Theatre is also part of the artist’s Greek heritage. In many of her exhibitions, she invokes archetypes of Greek theatre.
