Laurie Charles

Laurie Charles studied at the École supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux and lives and works in Brussels. She explores different techniques and media in her work, from painting and writing to performance, video and textiles. Owing to her personal experience with autoimmune disease, the human body is central to her art. Charles extensively researches the history of traditional, holistic and alternative medicine. She reinterprets her source materials from a personal, fictional and feminist perspective, magnifying anatomical elements and turning them into pop icons and flexible sculptures. Her work has been showcased in many galleries and art venues, such as CRAC Occitanie in Sète, Mécènes du Sud in Montpellier, the Salon de Montrouge, TerzoFronte in Rome, Grazer Kunstverein in Graz, CIAP in Hasselt, the Nanjing International Art Festival and WIELS, Beursschouwburg and Komplot in Brussels. It is part of different collections in Belgium and France, including those of Mu.ZEE in Ostend, FRAC Ile-de-France in Paris and the Domaine départemental de Chamarande.
