Since the middle of the 90s, Simona Denicolai and Ivo Provoost have together been creating performances and detailed interventions that question the place of artistic practices in the public sphere. The shapes and works produced, which are not necessarily immediately recognisable as works of art, are born out of context itself, in line with the two artists’ appropriation strategy.
Filmed in 2002 with ice cream maker Lanni Giovanni as a special guest,No Ice is the audiovisual stream of a performance that depicts an absurd carousel of eight identical ice cream vans moving round the Porteuse d'eau in the Barrière de Saint-Gilles. An endless circular stream of vehicles, sirens loudly and proudly wailing, announces the beginning of summer and its small pleasures. Putting the formal and stylistic characteristics of this strategically envisioned roundabout before its functional characteristics, the artists use this mechanical ballet to apply a poetic spirit to our daily urban landscape.
