LIVING PREAMBLE — A Ceremony with the Szenne

An open manhole reveals a deep underground shaft equipped with a metal ladder descending into the darkness.

Since 2021, Natural Contract Lab has been walking with the SZenne and its many kin: people, dragonflies, willows, sparrows, rain, Japanese knotweed, nettles — the visible and the invisible. From its source beneath a willow tree in Naast to the Zennegat in Mechelen, this journey follows the SZenne through the landscape, listening to its waters, its rhythms and its many relationships. During Kanal’s opening weekend, this journey takes the form of a collective ceremony.

Practical information
The River Oracle ritual takes place in Maximiliaan Park, opposite Kanal.
In Brussels, Walking with the SZenne begins at the Sewer Museum and invites participants to rediscover the urban landscape from the perspective of the invisible river. In the afternoon, the Living Law Song and the first River Oracle bring the voice and memory of the SZenne to the surface through collective singing and ritual. Together, these activities form part of the Living Preamble, a proposal to parliament calling for the recognition of the SZenne in Belgian law.
