NOCTURNES FOR A SOCIETY: SESSIONS

Myriam Van Imschoot and Lucas van Haesbroek invite you to participate in a series of SESSIONS leading up to the performance Nocturnes for a Society!

SESSIONS is a series of encounters with the audience focused on collective sound practice, along with a number of other artistic techniques – such as felting - which were developed in Nocturnes for a Society. Join us to explore and alter them together with the artists through voices, sounds, textiles, listening and dreaming.

The audience becomes both an actor and a witness of sound creation and effects. Participants are invited to explore a multitude of practices through the movement of voices in space, the sound and reverberation of a marble ball and a plate or the transformation of materials using the felting technique.

Nocturnes for a Society will be shaped by these sessions. The work takes the form of a 12-hour performance for which the audience creates its own soundtrack, allowing us to enter the states of wakefulness, daydreaming or sleep. The line between creative process and end result is blurred. This approach is inspired by the work of the American composer and sound activist Pauline Oliveros, who has dedicated part of her life to breaking down the barriers between artists and audiences, subject and object, professional and non-professional music.

PROGRAMME

SESSION: FELT

1.05.2023 - 12.30-18.00

On the day of labour we look at different ways to understand 'crafting' and the practice of felting. Felting invites us to smuggle dreams into the fabric.

SESSION: Stringing

3.05.2023 - 14.00-18.00

We use the image of the harp as a sensible and sensitive instrument to 'string' voices as lines that tune in and out of 'accord'. The score was first tested with Parts students and is now further developed.

SESSION: Sound session

5.05.2023 - 19:00-23:00

We will gather all scores of previous SESSION in a long experience in the evening.

SESSION: FELT

6.05.2023 - 10:30-16:30

We look at different ways to understand 'crafting'. Revisiting older techniques of felting brings us to a practice that combines making with spontaneous conversation and relating.

SESSION: Sound session

10.05.2023 - 14:00-18:00

We will gather all scores of previous SESSION in a long experience in the day.

SESSION: Listening states [Sold out]

12.05.2023  - start 19:30 on 12 may; end at 8:00 morning on 13 May.

Listening is a state of mind that can change our perception of music. In this long session we practice several forms of listening, both when awake and while asleep. The SESSION involves a sleep-over, late-night soup and early breakfast. Upon inscription you receive a service mail with practical details.
