Kasper Bosmans

Having finished his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp (2012) and HISK in Ghent (2014), Kasper Bosmans moved to Brussels, where he has lived and worked to this day. In 2016, he was artist in residence at WIELS. His artistic practice includes panel and wall paintings, sculpture and installations.

In response to traditional historiography dictated by the dominant heteronormative culture, Bosmans' enigmatic work aims to shed more light on an alternative history, particularly queer history, full of anecdotes, parallel stories and details as surprising as they are juicy. Fascinated by folk history and oral tradition, he bases his narrative paintings and Legend Paintings on the idealising biographies in saints' lives, faits divers, illustrated manuscripts and urban legends. By weaving unexpected links among all these references and combining all historical eras, he facilitates a new reading that is playful, universal, subversive and poetic at the same time.

The artist's work has already been shown in numerous group exhibitions in Belgium and abroad, as well as in solo exhibitions, notably at WIELS in Brussels (2022), the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro in Milan (2021), Gladstone Gallery in New York (2020 and 2018) and Brussels (2016), the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles (2017), the S.M.A.K. in Ghent (2016), Witte de With in Rotterdam (2016) and La Centrale (2016).

His work is represented in several private and public collections in Belgium (S.M.A.K., M Leuven, M HKA and Mu.ZEE) and abroad.

Kasper Bosmans was nominated as one of S.M.A.K.'s Coming People (2014) and for the Futur Generation Art Prize (2019). He has been represented by Gladstone Gallery since 2016.
