Brussels team Bauclub + MajuBois will design the future Kanal shop
Inspired by Brussels street shops of yore
Located on Kanal’s ground floor, the future shop will offer a wide selection of prints, art books, design objects, stationery, gifts ideas and gadgets. Visitors get a chance to discover creations and publications by emerging Brussels talent, or items linked to Kanal’s exhibitions or contemporary art and design in general, all reflecting the new museum’s DNA.
The interior design of the shop was awarded to a team from Brussels: the architectural firm Bauclub, partnering with bespoke furniture maker MajuBois.
Their winning design takes its cue from the typical ‘street shops’ in the collective memory of Brussels residents: market stalls, flea markets, newspaper kiosks and night shops. This inspiration was translated into three modular pieces of furniture: the stall – a multifunctional display unit; the brocante – a horizontal display/podium with pull-out tables; and the kiosk – a presentation box that doubles as a fitting room. In addition, Bauclub+Majubois employ another iconic street fixture to make the shop stand out inside Kanal: neon advertising signs.
The shop can also be transformed overnight: a floor with sports court markings provides structure and allows the furnishings and layout to be rearranged at will. The walls are also left blank to keep open every possible option.
The eco-friendly design will feature reusable and sustainable materials such as Gondella shelving units and timber from the Sonian Forest.
