Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven (AMVK)
Since the late 1970s, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven or AMVK for short, has produced an extensive body of work in various media: drawings, collages, paintings, and videos. Her work is diverse, but at the same time immediately recognisable: colourful, layered, feminist, and strongly socially critical. Alongside visual arts, music plays an important role in Van Kerckhoven's practice. Together with her partner, Danny Devos, she played a key role in the Antwerp experimental music scene under the band name Club Moral (1981–now). AMVK is a key figure of Belgian art and a pioneer in the use of technology in art practice. Her commitment to interdisciplinarity and innovation reflects KANAL’s programme mission.
Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven had numerous solo exhibitions, including at M HKA, Antwerp (2018, 2006 and 1999); Kunstverein, München (2015); Kunstmuseum Luzern (2008); and Kunsthalle, Bern (2005). Her work was featured in several group exhibitions at venues such as ICA, Philadelphia; The Artist's Institute, New York; Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach (2016); and S.M.A.K., Ghent (2003). She also participated in Manifesta 7 in Italy in 2008. Her work is represented in many important public collections, such as Kunsthalle, Bern; Royal Museums of Fine Arts Belgium, Brussels; M HKA, Antwerp; and the University of Chicago. In 2023 she has been the second artist, after Laure Prouvost, invited to work on KANAL’s Façade series commission.
