ECHO OVATIONS: HUMAN DELAYS FROM INNER SPACE
18/10/2020
Sound performance for intro-active audience in a large space
Celebrating what comes back to you, praising what leaves you:
in this inter- and intro-active sound performance Helbich invites the audience to a deep listening experience using sounds recorded in places with reverb tails as long as their history. Spread out over an entire floor of the former Citroen showrooms the listeners will be guided to the moment where sound disappears, wondering if it really ever left us.

Series of instruction cards
Visitors to the gallery are each given a card bearing the words Safety Measures on one side and a simple instruction on the reverse. The instructions which make up Safety Measures suggest modes, behaviours, tactics and systems for avoiding danger – some practical and common-sense; others mythical or bordering on desperate. Each instruction serves as a frame through which to view and encounter the world while at the same time playfully inviting the museum visitors to alter their behaviour once they leave the museum.

OH! RAGE
23/10/2020 — 24/10/2020
Calixto Neto’s Oh! Rage works on making minority bodies visible, and on remodelling their imaginaries. Based on a research into “peripheral” dances, in other words those that have been developed on the margins of institutional frameworks, his first solo focuses on the representation of black bodies, grasped at the crossroads between several emancipation discourses. He brings in the movements of Afropunk and Afrofuturisme, post-colonial research, especially covering Brazil, black studies and contemporary art.

ECHO / ECART
26/09/2020 — 27/09/2020
27/09/2020 — 28/09/2020
Ten young artists working in different art forms, who have all shared the experience of studying performance at La Cambre, appropriate the collective dynamics and the playful philosophy of the Groupe Écart (1969-1982) that John Armleder belonged to. This process of appropriation coincides with the pandemic, which has temporarily cancelled any performances at KANAL and has meant that the group has had to work remotely for several months.

"Perform the pieces in any order,
but do them all for best results.
Don't be put off by the historical references.
It is all about you and your actual experience.
If you enjoy this, do it twice." (from the scores)

In IN (2003) a performer remains motionless in a display window filled with water. The distortion to the performers' senses caused by the environment causes a state of trance. The sounds of breathing and movement are amplified by microphones.
« Kris Verdonck's imagery originates from an extreme theatrical simplicity and only gradually unveils its staggering power » - Elke Van Campenhout in De Standaard

21/03/2021 — 22/03/2021
A drag queen, a drag king, a book, an attentive child and an adult by its side.
How can we reflect on the notion of gender through literature, music, poetry, words and colours when we are still young? They don't change their skin to enchant us, they just change their costume. How to approach these complex subjects when you still have a lot of glitter in your eyes? Well, it depends.

FELIX KINDERMANN
CHOIR PIECE
11/10/2020 — 12/10/2020
In staging the choir Ghent Singers as a moving sculpture, Felix Kindermann‘s Choir Piece questions our relationship with the term togetherness, mirroring today‘s Zeitgeist along with its societal distortions. Through rearrangement, fragmentation, and techniques of acoustic distortion, the work creates a feeling of alienation, destabilizing the interrelated appearance and effect of the choir as a familiar cultural asset, blurring the lines which are dissolved through the play with essential opposites like harmony and disharmony, the individual and the collective.
