Absurd slices of social life or allegories of inner, psychic experience, the microfictions of filmmaker Ariane Loze play out in dystopian worlds that often appear deserted and where the protagonists work through states of crisis, interrogating and confiding in one another, or searching for a way out.

The starting point for this film are Meggy Rustamova’s numerous attempts to photograph a tree in Hiroshima, Japan. The audiovisual trip highlights aspects of the imagination through photography, film and sound. Today’s nuclear threats and wars are translated into the white, overexposed photos, which turn into a complete ‘white-out’.

Since 2013, CINEMATEK has been defending the exceptional and unique oeuvre of Chinese documentary filmmaker Wang Bing. In December, we will show his latest film, Dead Souls (2018), which was also presented in Cannes. At the same time, in KANAL-Centre Pompidou we present Wang’s Mi Niang, a film produced by CINEMATEK, that is shown for the first (and only) time. There, it enters into a dialogue with Eight Chapters in Four Movements by Italian artist Teresa Cos: a confrontation of two temporal experiences.

Rosa de Lima
07/11/2018 — 12/11/2018
21/11/2018 — 26/11/2018
19 kilometres off the Peruvian capital Lima, Villa El Salvador is no ordinary "barriada". With its more than 300,000 inhabitants, it is a true example of self-management, autonomy and community. Joëlle de La Casinière makes a portrait of this "new city", built out of nothing, in no time, in the middle of nowhere. Associating boleros, rancheras, and other South American popular music genres with the devastating sight of desert roads and industrial cars, de La Casinière plays with the existing stereotypes of South America, highlighting thus this continent's great contrasts.

Soledad al fin del mundo
07/11/2018 — 12/11/2018
21/11/2018 — 26/11/2018
In parallel with the retrospective it devotes to the Argentine filmmaker Lisandro Alonso in November, CINEMATEK presents two films[S T1] by visual artist Carlos Casas at Kanal: Soledad al fin del mundo and Patagonian Fieldworks. These documentary works, filmed in Patagonia, resonate with the snowy landscapes of the same region, splendidly pictured by Alonso. In Kanal, the work of Carlos Casas is projected in a loop. It goes into dialogue with Rosa de Lima and Cargadores by French, Brussels-based, artist Joëlle de La Casinière.

CARGADORES
14/11/2018 — 19/11/2018
28/11/2018 — 03/12/2018
Cargadores is the first in a series of ten films that come further out of Joëlle de La Casinière and Michel Bonnemaison’s seven-year stay on the American continent. The ‘cargadores’ referred to in the title are Cuzco’s street porters, human beings who carry on their back a huge bundle with all the sorrows of the world. Their load can be sometimes so big that they seem to disappear underneath it, becoming a part of the mass of objects they carry.
