The ambition to acquire a collection of its own arose at the very moment KANAL was launched as an institution. It presupposes the implicit desire to play a role as a catalyst in artistic production as well as the cultural and social responsibility that comes with selecting, acquiring and exhibiting works of art.
Initiated in 2018 and funded by the Brussels-Capital Region, our collection focuses on 21st century art by artists living and working in Brussels and Belgium. Reflecting our commitment to interdisciplinarity, the collection embraces all media, from painting, sculpture, drawing and prints to photography, film, video, installations and performance to archive material. It aims to represent the diversity of the Belgian artistic scene and the complexity of contemporary art practices.
We aspire to make this ever-growing collection accessible to broad audiences. The artworks will form an essential part of our future programme of exhibitions and collection displays. Loans to other institutions and an online presence and contextualisation serve the same purpose.
