In parallel with the retrospective it devotes to the Argentine filmmaker Lisandro Alonso in November, CINEMATEK presents two films[S T1]  by visual artist Carlos Casas at Kanal: Soledad al fin del mundo and Patagonian Fieldworks. These documentary works, filmed in Patagonia, resonate with the snowy landscapes of the same region, splendidly pictured by  Alonso. In Kanal, the work of Carlos Casas is projected in a loop. It goes into dialogue with Rosa de Lima and Cargadores by French, Brussels-based, artist Joëlle de La Casinière.

The first Black bishop to be appointed by the Catholic Church was supposed to settle in Utica, Tunisia but never reached his final destination. His story was the inspiration for Sammy Baloji’s new performance. Missa Utica retraces the priest’s journey and explores the history of the Kongo Kingdom in the 15th century and the evangelisation of Africa. We witness the initial contact and first diplomatic exchanges, alliances built and broken.

16/07/202108/08/2021

For this Studio Cité event, Benjamin Vandewalle sets up a kind of art fairground, which allows visitors to view the city and its streets from a different angle. Studio Cité consists of a dozen interactive installations and performances, each playing a game that affects the way you perceive reality. You can sit on your own driven along in a moving carriage with mirrors, you can dance with other passers-by or you can just stand on the sidelines and watch people wearing strange periscopes on their heads making their way around.

The Act of Breathing: Notes on Fugitivity

16/09/2023

With The Act of Breathing: Notes on Fugitivity, curators Sorana Munsya and Evelyn Simons create a space-time in which to analyse the links between the struggle to breathe and the concept of Black fugitivity. The notion of Fugitivity, mainly developed in Black American and Caribbean literature, refers to the history of slavery and the flight of maroons from plantations. Here, we will be exploring how to translate this concept into a contemporary Belgian postcolonial context.
