RENÉ HEYVAERT
26/06/2019 — 27/06/2019
Heyvaert remained unknown for most of his life. Nevertheless, after his death in 1984, his work had a posthumous recognition by a fringe of the art world, and the sharp but marginal critics. Since then, the confidential heritage of the artist and architect is cherished by a small circle of initiates. Recently, a new form of notoriety was finally granted - among others, by an ambitious retrospective at the M Museum of Leuven and by several publications that interrogate a singular facet of the character and its work that intertwines with his personal history.

In the frame of Working Title Festival
Absurd slices of social life or allegories of inner, psychic experience, the microfictions of filmmaker Ariane Loze play out in dystopian worlds that often appear deserted and where the protagonists work through states of crisis, interrogating and confiding in one another, or searching for a way out.

Cinema as Assembly

In a time of global crises, how can contemporary cinematic practices align with and support political imaginations striving for social justice and antifascist liberation? How do they help us rehearse these imaginations?
Cinema as Assembly is a three-day study circle that invites the public to come together – as an audience, as thinkers and as makers – to explore cinema’s potential as both a method and medium that can help rehearse collective organisation, militant imagination and liberatory transformation.

Swamp Sacrifices
24/02/2024
Since 2021, artists Paula Almiron and Wouter De Raeve have been working in Brussels’ Northern Quarter to investigate the impact of urban planning on local communities. The neighbourhood, like many others in the city, is located in a large swampy area, which was drained to provide space for the growing city. The swamp buried under the asphalt streets of Brussels serves as a starting point of Swamp Sacrifices, a two-day programme of performances, a concert, screenings, and talks.

In parallel with the retrospective it devotes to the Argentine filmmaker Lisandro Alonso in November, CINEMATEK presents two films[S T1] by visual artist Carlos Casas at Kanal: Soledad al fin del mundo and Patagonian Fieldworks. These documentary works, filmed in Patagonia, resonate with the snowy landscapes of the same region, splendidly pictured by Alonso. In Kanal, the work of Carlos Casas is projected in a loop. It goes into dialogue with Rosa de Lima and Cargadores by French, Brussels-based, artist Joëlle de La Casinière.
