Artist and filmmaker Marie Voignier uses documentary material as a terrain for visual and methodological experiments. Her film Les immobiles (2013) portrays an era noted for the obscene violence of organised safaris on the African continent, at a time when it was in the process of shaking off the yoke of colonialism. The film homes in on the decadent cultural practices of that period which has not entirely disappeared. Sitting in front of a fixed lens camera, a retired hunting guide slowly turns the pages of his memoirs.

During the decolonisation war between Portugal and Guinea-Bissau (1963-1974), the leader of the independence movement Amílcar Cabral sent a few young people to Cuba for film training so that they could come back and document the political situation in their country. Sana Na N'Hada, Flora Gomes, José Bolama Cobumba and Josefina Crato produced films, a few surviving fragments of which were found in 2011 and restored in Berlin.

Crystals and precious stones have captivated humans since the dawn of time. Artificially recreated, they have invaded our multiple industries and have been the subject of many technological advances. Fascinating by their preciousness and their unique structures, they have recently enjoyed cultural success and an imaginative exploration within contemporary art and design where their ornamental function is explored in almost all of its uses.

Pandora’s myth probably first surfaced to help us answer age-old questions. Why do people get sick and die? Why do bad things happen? And while Pandora is often cast as the reviled bringer of evil, she also brought fertility, since birth and death did not exist before she released them.

Following the demolition of the Berlin Wall, Chantal Akerman captures the reality and mutation of the former Soviet states, shot from summer through to winter in a series of travelling or static shots. From East Germany to Moscow, passing through Poland, Lithuania and the Ukraine, she records the bodies and faces of the anonymous masses, either walking or, with closed faces, simply waiting for who knows what. She films buildings, landscapes, the snow or the night and offers a mass of visual and aural impressions, in a mesmerising, impressionistic poem.

FARMER TRAIN SWIRL - ÉTUDE
06/04/2019 — 07/04/2019
The origins of this new project by Cassiel Gaube can be found in his interest in street dance and house, which he has studied and performed. A precise interweaving of moves and steps allows him to compress a choreographic writing that opens up a poetic space and questions the essential act of the step. This project is being hosted by Kanal - Centre Pompidou.
