Since 2013, CINEMATEK has been defending the exceptional and unique oeuvre of Chinese documentary filmmaker Wang Bing. In December, we will show his latest film, Dead Souls (2018), which was also presented in Cannes. At the same time, in KANAL-Centre Pompidou we present Wang’s Mi Niang, a film produced by CINEMATEK, that is shown for the first (and only) time. There, it enters into a dialogue with Eight Chapters in Four Movements by Italian artist Teresa Cos: a confrontation of two temporal experiences.

I...Cognitive maps - Chapter 1 - Ely Daou
29/05/2019 — 31/05/2019
What do you remember about a room? Or about an apartment or space you lived in, but which no longer exists or where you never went back to. In I... Cognitive Maps - Chapter 1 artist Ely Daou, born in Beirut in 1986, travels through his memory – and history – attempting to sketch the different apartments and living spaces he occupied during and just after the Lebanese Civil War. The architectural details – as they are remembered or perhaps transformed by the artist’s memory – become the starting points for re-entering both the spaces and the past. I...

Karl Van Welden
IMAGES FOR MARS II
17/08/2018 — 31/08/2018
For the video work IMAGES FOR MARS II (life-sized projection) Karl Van Welden investigates the effect of a disaster on the human body. We see people in a state of carelessness, until a dark ash rain falls upon them, turning their idyll into a catastrophy. Or how a blissful picnic in the park becomes a scene of charred bodies on a patch of scorched earth. During the action the falling ash rain transforms the image slowly but steadily. The performers fight their personal battle while their vitality is under threat. As the physical body changes state, the image becomes a monochrome.

Je: a young woman alone at home moves her furniture around, eventually pushing it against the wall and laying down on the floor. Tu: while eating sugar with a teaspoon, she writes letters. The days pass, the pages accumulate. Il: after several weeks spent tearing up and starting the letters anew, she goes out at night and meets a trucker. He talks about himself, about desire, about his relationship to women. Elle: in the middle of the night, the girl goes to a woman friend, who first rejects her, then shares her meal and bed with her.

Gates (might) open soon
09/07/2021 — 17/07/2021
Gates (might) open soon explores the socio-cultural phenomenon of the festival and its various manifestations. Traditionally understood as celebrations that include rituals and ceremonies, festivals also question social hierarchies and produce ephemeral communities based on sharing. Offering both escapism and liberation, festivals open the gates to a flow of emotions, revealing the sensual, spontaneous, and even darker sides of human nature.

Nazanin Fakoor
RAINBOW
09/07/2018 — 13/07/2018
Rainbow is a performance that questions identity and its multiple facets. In a solo on stage several characters appear in dialogue with each other – like a rainbow they are formed by reflection, refraction and dispersion of sunlight on raindrops. Nazanin Fakoor affirms that we all are the result of an infinity of reflections or refractions of the encounters that we make during our life, and this from the beginning, with our first meeting – that with our family. Our identity is plural.

CHARLOTTE VANDEN EYNDE & NICOLAS ROMBOUTS - Hyphen
Day of the dance
27/04/2019
In their improvisation, choreographer Charlotte Vanden Eynde and double bass player Nicolas Rombouts explore the power and vulnerability of creating in the here and now. For Rombouts playing music is instant composition, for Vanden Eynde dancing is thinking. In Hyphen they become two parts of the same brain and explore the tension between intuition and mental control, between spontaneity and repetition.

In parallel with the retrospective it devotes to the Argentine filmmaker Lisandro Alonso in November, CINEMATEK presents two films[S T1] by visual artist Carlos Casas at Kanal: Soledad al fin del mundo and Patagonian Fieldworks. These documentary works, filmed in Patagonia, resonate with the snowy landscapes of the same region, splendidly pictured by Alonso. In Kanal, the work of Carlos Casas is projected in a loop. It goes into dialogue with Rosa de Lima and Cargadores by French, Brussels-based, artist Joëlle de La Casinière.

Birds
18/09/2022
Following the success of Tornar (2015) and INVITED (2018), dancer and choreographer Seppe Baeyens builds upon his exploration of shaping a temporary community in Birds. For this new creation, he steps outside the theatre walls and ventures into the public space with a group of performers and musicians. There the normal course of events is interrupted – sometimes invisibly and sometimes plainly.

Paper Lane
17/10/2020 — 18/10/2020
Paper Lane represents an act of resistance in the face of the digital revolution, the profusion of overabundance and high-speed and high-tech life, that destroy the silence necessary for meditation, introspection and reflection. This act is based on the observation of the need for a radical deceleration and is inspired by the book Alienation and Acceleration: Towards a Critical Theory of Late-Modern Temporality by the German sociologist and philosopher Hartmut Rosa.

Dancer of the Year - Trajal Harrell
05/10/2018 — 10/10/2018
For his first appearance at the festival, Trajal Harrell presents his latest creation, Dancer of the Year. In recent years the American dancer and choreographer has toured the world with a series of shows in which he brings together the modern dance of the white, artistic middle class with the voguing dance style practised by the African American and Latino LGBTQ communities. For the festival he ventures into a full-length solo project for the first time in a while.
