WORK-IN-PROGRESS / PROTOTYPE

In Rainbow, Nazanin Fakoor explores the theme of ‘identity’, both from her personal experience as an artist with roots in Iran, Germany and Belgium, and from a universal human perspective. For her, identity is fluid and by definition multiple. The rainbow from the title symbolises the many layers that shape our human existence.

It Never Ends – Christian Marclay

04/02/202107/03/2021

Christian Marclay’s work which stands at the crossroads of visual arts and sound, has focused since the late 1970s on the connection between music, objects, films, and images. Organised around two major works by the London-based Swiss American artist that were produced two decades apart, this exhibition reveals the artist's continued focus on the musical symbols present in our everyday lives, like the many calls to act out our existence.

Miniature works

Have you ever climbed to the top of scaffolding? Have you ever seen trees ... upside down? Have you ever seen a wood fire in… neon lights? Have you ever seen objects that become what you want them to be? And that then become your own work of art? If, as is the case with John M Armleder, art is a game to you, let's go discover his works together as we wander through the vast expanses of the KANAL museum: supine, vertical, upside down, dancing, meditating, in the dark, in the light, etc.

JEANNE COLIN & KILLIAN MADELEINE - Reception

Day of the dance

27/04/201928/04/2019

In every sculpture and every monument there is an attempt to capture our convictions for eternity. And yet even stone erodes. What does a truth need to remain valid? In their sensitive duet Jeanne Colin and Killian Madeleine go in search of an anchorage – in themselves and in each other. Their stability is constantly put to the test by the soft clay floor on which they move. An ode to the fragility and strength of the body.

It Never Ends – Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge

18/03/202125/04/2021

An artist who pushes out limits, a cult figure, originally part of the industrial music scene, a public figure committed to the gender battle, Genesis P-Orridge died in New York in March 2020. For 50 years she maintained an artistic correspondence with John M Armleder, who wanted to dedicate an exhibition to her.

DAN MUSSETT & LAURENT DELOM dddddddddduettttttttttttttttttttttttt

Day of the dance

27/04/2019

In their very first performance together, dancers Dan Mussett and Laurent Delom go in search of the perfect symbiosis. What happens when two individuals give up their individuality for a unity that transcends them? In a playful exploration of what it means to become a person’s teacher, shadow, friend, rival, mirror, brother or colleague, all boundaries are slowly fading away.

Wang Bing

Mi Niang

At the same time, in KANAL we present Wang’s  Mi Niang  , a film produced by CINEMATEK, that is shown for the first (and only) time. There, it enters into a dialogue with  Eight Chapters in Four Movements by Italian artist Teresa Cos: a confrontation of two temporal experiences.

The Act of Breathing: Notes on Fugitivity

16/09/2023

With The Act of Breathing: Notes on Fugitivity, curators Sorana Munsya and Evelyn Simons create a space-time in which to analyse the links between the struggle to breathe and the concept of Black fugitivity. The notion of Fugitivity, mainly developed in Black American and Caribbean literature, refers to the history of slavery and the flight of maroons from plantations. Here, we will be exploring how to translate this concept into a contemporary Belgian postcolonial context.
